What is Balayage Hair Colour?
The word balayage comes from the French, meaning “to sweep”. It involves hand-painting soft highlights throughout your hair give it a beautiful natural look, as though you have been out in the sun all day. This free-hand technique allows us to place your highlights exactly where they are needed, achieving a subtler effect than that created with conventional foil highlights as we can avoid creating any hard lines in the colour. The result is a bespoke individual look which can be adapted to your individual personality and style.
Balayage can look fabulous on all shades of blonde, brown, red, auburn or even grey hair. As well as working well with all natural hair colour shades, such as popular blondes and warm caramel tones, balayage is also an excellent way to try out a flash of a bright fashion colour such as an on-trend pastel shade.
What’s the Difference Between Balayage and Ombré?
Ombré produces a more contrasted two-toned effect, usually by creating hair colour that is darker at the roots and lighter at the ends of the hair. Balayage, by contrast, produces a more multi-dimensional result with hair colours hand-painted in vertical sections so as to simulate where the sun might catch the light on your hair.
There are many other hair colouring techniques and variations on balayage, including colour blending, babylights, baby balayage, root melt, root stretch, colour melt or free-hand highlights. If you’ve seen a hair look you love, bring us in an image and we’ll adapt the look for you.
How Long Will It Take To Create My Balayage Look?
The length of your amount of time taken will depend on whether we are adding balayage throughout your hair or just a few highlights, for example around your face. Your hair may also require some preparation to achieve the final result you are aiming for. Book in for a complimentary consultation and we will assess your hair and be able to advise you on how long it will take to create the look you desire.

How Do I Maintain My Balayage Colour?
Our stylists will advise you on how to keep your balayage looking fabulous for longer. One of the many good things about balayage is that it is relatively low maintenance – your root regrowth will be less obvious than with conventional foil highlights. It's easy to see why this is such a popular look!
To maintain your balayage at it’s best we recommend that you visit your colourist every 8-12 weeks to freshen it up. In addition, we would suggest that a quick colour glossing touch-up session every 6 weeks will keep your hair looking gorgeous between appointments. We also recommend using a professional quality colour care shampoo and conditioner. Speak to your Esente colourist for more advice on this.
